On the shelves beneath the safe, she glimpsed a dull black shape. A thick plastic case, rough and oddly-shaped. It was also cheaply made, the already heat-warped shell cracked when she flipped open the corroded clasps.

Regina carefully ran her fingers over the violin resting on fake velvet lining. The body had begun to splinter and the catgut had long since loosened and lost its tone. The bow's horsehair broke free from its clasp, falling over her fingers, thread by thread. Futilely, she turned the bow upside down, letting the thin strands drift with the trembling of her hand. The more she tried to gather the threads together, the more crumbled and fell to the carpeting, until the whole handful had drifted away.

She carefully picked the strands out of the case, dropping them on the floor. The bow fit back into the molded plastic set into the cover. The instrument was worn, broken, and she handled it gingerly. Mindful of the delicate condition, she tucked the violin into her neck and rested her chin on the worn-smooth plastic.

Written for a 3.5 Dungeons & Dragons campaign, A Deeper Jungle set the tone for the ensuing horror/macabre campaign featuring Cas, the god of Spite, a lesser-known diety in the basic D&D universe, from the Heroes of Horror sourcebook.

As if unhearing, the corpse continues. "My god has protected me, and he shall do the same for you--"

You stand up, shakily, and disbelieving as to what lays before you. The corpse shakes and groans again, and there is a slight snap-pop-thump as a knee-cap falls from the rotted tendons to the dry, hard-packed dirt, coming to rest next to a desiccated tibia and fibula. Where the foot is stands as a mystery.

Is he speaking of the relic? You think as the now amputated limb shifts slightly, as if relieved by the loss of weight. Should you back away, or stay and listen, hoping that the raw muscle can still move the jaw enough to reveal the horrible story behind this macabre oasis? Shuddering with the thought of what lays before you, you approach the boulder.

What a mess, huh?

Come again?

All I wanted to do was make our job easier. Take out Concord, that's it. Then we wouldn't have to fight our own system along with the skells on the street.

And Martinez might lose his job over this.

That is not what I wanted.

It's what you got.

I'm going to have to live with that, I guess.
